(SB47) Scott’s – Bell 47, Inc. (SB47) became the talk of Heli Expo 2013 today with their announcement that they will return the Model 47 to production as a new turbine powered helicopter with the Rolls Royce RR300 engine. The model will be named the 47GT-6. This historic announcement was made today at 12:30PM on day 1 of the Heli Expo 2013 show in Las Vegas, NV.

Don Maguire, SB47's Director of Customer Support & Services, and a former Bell 47 mechanic & pilot himself, made the announcement from their Heli Expo booth #N4712. He stated that the 47GT-6 will be based upon the 47G-3B-2A type design, modified by STC to incorporate the RR300 engine. The STC will also include a new, modern Instrument Panel similar to that currently being developed by SB47 for use on the piston driven fleet of Bell 47 helicopters still in service. Use of the 47G-3B-2A platform takes advantage of the 3,200 lb MGW with external load that model was originally certificated for. The helicopter will also incorporate other improvements including Composite Main Rotor Blades, LED Exterior Lighting and new Interiors, plus SB47 hopes to drive down operating cost to market leading numbers through the use of modern drive train technologies. Mr Maguire said they expect to start deliveries in 2016 and will be taking orders for 2016, 2017 & 2018 at the Heli Expo show. He also confirmed that the 2013 list price is $750,000 and that all orders received by the end of this month will take advantage of a zero price escalation between now & 2016. At the end of this launch customer program, the list price is expected to be announced at around $820,000 in 2016.

Hundreds of Bell 47 manufactured some 40 or 50 years ago are reported to be still flying many hours per year, mainly in the Agricultural and Training markets, as well as for personal use. SB47 said they expect customers of the new 47GT-6 to enjoy the same durability and longevity that those original helicopters exhibited, but with the advantage of modern equipment, improved performance, and reduced operating costs.
Scott Churchill, President & Owner of Scott's Bell 47, stated that the 47GT-6 helicopter will be manufactured at a recently acquired 200,000 sq ft facility in Le Sueur, MN, close to Scott's Helicopter Services and the current SB47 headquarters. He went on to say that the Bell 47 had been the best light utility helicopter for the last 50 years and that he expects with the use of the RR300 turbine engine, new composite main rotor blades, and other modern improvements, the SB47 manufactured 47GT-6 will become the best light utility helicopter of the 21st century.

Scott’s – Bell 47, Inc. (SB47) announced today a change of leadership related to the successful completion of their start-up phase, after acquisition of the Bell 47 Type Certificates in 2010.
Chris Meyer, formerly of Northwest Airlines Corp, has been appointed General Manager of SB47, and Neil Marshall is departing from his full time role with the company. Neil, a Partner at Vaeden Solutions, a provider of project, advisory, and interim management services, will continue to support SB47 on an advisory basis. Chris, who managed the transition of the Type Certificates, parts, & intellectual property from Bell in 2010, is currently the General Manager of Texas Helicopter Company, Inc., a sister company to SB47, and has worked alongside Neil as they have developed SB47 over the past 2 years.

Neil leaves the company with established operational processes, Drafting, Supply Chain & Quality Departments, all developed successfully with FAA oversight since 2011. SB47 has converted over 500 drawings of Bell legacy parts using modern 3D CAD techniques, including the replacement of out of date manufacturing standards with modern processes and standards. SB47 has over 180 FAA approved PMA’s for use on the Bell 47 helicopters, has received over 3,700 newly manufactured parts, consisting of 39 high priority, unique part numbers, to replenish spares inventory, and has multi-million dollar commitments with the established supplier base for more. SB47 is also close to completing the development of a new state of the art instrument panel STC and have opened a new project with the FAA for new composite main rotor blades.
"I am extremely proud to have been part of the SB47 start-up and of the team we have assembled. It is an agile, cost effective operation and the right solution for Bell 47 support." said Neil. "To work on the 47 was a privilege. It is a unique, iconic helicopter. What other product, developed in the 1940's, still does a better job than its modern 21st century counterparts. Ask any Ag operator and they will tell you; if I can be assured of support & parts, I will use the Bell 47. I will always look back on my time with Scott's with pride and will always be a supporter of Scott and his efforts to prolong & develop the fleet" speaking of Scott Churchill, President & Owner of SB47.

Meet Chris Meyer and the rest of the Scott’s – Bell 47 team at Heli Expo 2013 in Las Vegas, NV, March 5-7, booth # N4712.

Scott’s – Bell 47, Inc. (SB47) today announced their intentions to launch a Model 47 Upgrade Program at Heli-Expo in Dallas on February 12. This program gives customers the choice to have their existing Model 47 upgraded or to purchase a refurbished/upgraded 47G-2A configuration (narrow body) or 47G-2A-1 (wide body) configuration helicopter direct from the OEM.
The upgrade program will apply to all Lycoming powered 47G type helicopters from the 47G-2 through to the 47G-5A, excluding the Franklin powered 47G-3. These upgrades will include the recently announced new Instrument Panel, Interiors & the Composite Main Rotor Blades all under development, along with existing performance improving Texas Helicopter Co., Inc. STCs such as the No-Bar, Sprag & Muffler. Optional overhaul of Airframe & Systems, Engines and Drive System components, plus installation of new zero-time life limited components, will be included in the program.
“We are very excited to be launching this upgrade program.” stated Scott Churchill, President/Owner of Scott’s – Bell 47, Inc. “The foundations have been laid within SB47 over the past 2 years to get to this point. The 47 is one of the most durable, long lasting helicopters in the industry, but spares availability has made it increasingly challenging to keep them in service. These upgrades, using modern components, will provide a new lease of life to those helicopters enabling them to operate for years to come.”
“The refurbished 47G-2A & 47G-2A-1 helicopters will be as close to a new Model 47 as you can get without a new engine or transmission.” stated Neil Marshall, General Manager of Scott’s – Bell 47, Inc. “With a full 1,200hr overhaul period ahead of them, zero-time life limited components, new instrument panel, avionics options & interior plus the new composite main rotor blades these improved Model 47 are a truly viable purchase option for the modern training & utility markets.”
SB47 expects to start deliveries of Upgrades to customer-owned Model 47’s in Q4 2012 and Refurbished/Upgraded 47G-2A & 47G-2A-1 configuration helicopters in Q1 2013. They will be taking orders at Heli-Expo in Dallas, Texas this February.

Scott’s – Bell 47, Inc. (SB47) today announced that they have contracted with IAC Ltd. to develop new composite main rotor blades for the model 47 fleet. IAC is an internationally recognized main and tail rotor blade repair & overhaul service provider in Fort Worth, Texas with FAA certifications to inspect & repair all major OEM’s rotor blades. In addition to repair activities, IAC and its affiliates are currently developing new blade designs for several helicopter models.

The new main rotor blade will consist of a custom selected airfoil for improved performance and will be developed using the latest composite materials design & manufacturing technologies. SB47 anticipates this new airfoil will provide increases in hover performance and a reduction in fuel burn. The development plan also includes fatigue & damage tolerance testing planned to demonstrate a service life increase over the current 5,000 flight hours for the Bell designed metal blades. SB47 also confirmed that the composite blade will be designed to retain the Model 47 helicopter’s best-in-class Autorotation capability. It is intended that these new blades be interchangeable in pairs with the current metal blades in-service.

“We think this is a very exciting development for the model 47 operators.” stated Scott Churchill, President/Owner of Scott’s – Bell 47, Inc. “We have been getting asked for some time if we were considering a composite main rotor blade, and after working with a number of potential suppliers it was clear that this is the right choice rather than continuing to manufacture the existing metal blades.”
“The value proposition for a composite main rotor blade is extremely positive.” stated Neil Marshall, General Manager of Scott’s – Bell 47. “Improved performance, potential for improved service life, inherent damage tolerance, manufacturing consistency blade-to-blade, and we are able to provide this while maintaining the best-in-class autorotation performance of the Model 47.” Also with an eye to safety the new blades will come as standard with a high visibility paint scheme. “We expect the new blades to be available late 2013 and we will keep our customer base informed as we progress towards that goal. Considering the recent announcement of a new Instrument Panel for the Model 47, we believe this sends a strong message to the marketplace that SB47 is committed to developing the Model 47 fleet.”
SB47 will offer customers the option to advance order the new composite main rotor blades at an introductory price starting at the upcoming Heli-Expo in Dallas, Texas next month. IAC, Ltd will also be on-hand at the show to answer questions regarding the new blades.

news

LE SUEUR, MINNESOTA (August 23, 2011) Scott’s – Bell 47, Inc. (SB47), OEM for the Model 47 helicopter, today announced a reduction of their Main Rotor Blade spares pricing to $45,000 per blade, -13 & -21, and $45,500 for the -23. This reduction is driven by the customer survey responses received over the past 6 months and is afforded by their re-sourcing efforts to establish a new blade manufacturer.
“The response to our customer market survey has been outstanding, with over 200 owner/operators providing input.” stated Neil Marshall, SB47 General Manager. He went on to explain “We asked our customers for their feedback in regards to maintenance costs, parts pricing & product improvements, and the resounding response was that blade pricing was too high. After an extensive sourcing program we are close to announcing the new blade manufacturer, and this now allows us to publish the new price for blades which reflects a 30% saving on the most recent list price.”
The market survey has reinforced SB47 President & Owner Scott Churchill’s belief that the Model 47 still has a place in the rotorcraft market. He stated that “Over 80% of customers indicated they would be interested in an upgrade to their aircraft, and almost 70% said they would be interested to purchase a brand new Model 47 in the next 1-5 years, rather than purchase a competitor aircraft. Ensuring we have the right spare parts on the shelf remains our #1 priority but we are reviewing what improvements would be required to make the Model 47 competitive again. Discussions with the FAA & the supply base are very encouraging. If we can satisfy the customer demands for reduced maintenance costs and refresh the aircraft but keep the price competitive, then it’s clear the customer demand is there.”
Scott’s – Bell 47, Inc.’s blade pricing is effective immediately. Neil Marshall clarified “we have stock of the -13, -21 & -23 blades, but it is limited and our new source will deliver brand new blades starting in Q2 2011. So we encourage our customers to purchase blades earlier rather than later to ensure availability.”

LE SUEUR, MINNESOTA (February 3, 2011) – Scott’s – Bell 47 Inc. (SB47) today provided an update to the marketplace on their progress as OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) of the Model 47 helicopter and also announced their plans for Heli-Expo 2011, March 5-8, in Orlando, Florida.

“Ensuring a good supply of quality, affordable spare parts to the existing Model 47 fleet has to be our initial priority” stated Neil Marshall (SB47 Program Manager). “We are actively exploring new sources of supply for main rotor blades, a clear priority for operators, plus we have re-opened discussions with suppliers of long lead parts, some of which have not been purchased for many years, to ensure that in the near term the right parts are available at the right price for our operators.”

To establish priorities in this re-sourcing activity Mr. Marshall stated that “we are surveying the existing customer base to understand their priorities and to gain their guidance on the right direction for Model 47 business development. The survey will be available publicly on our website later this month and will also be made available to customers at our booth at Heli-Expo 2011.”

Chris Meyer (SB47 General Manager) expanded on Scott’s – Bell 47 Inc’s plans for the Heli-Expo. “We have secured, fittingly, booth number 47 and are proud to have our first presence at Heli-Expo as an OEM. Bell Helicopter’s Customer Training Academy has kindly offered their Model 47G-4A which will be on static display at our booth. We are very much looking forward to the show, where we intend to update the customer base on our business development and continue to build strong relationships with the supply base.”

Mr. Marshall explained that potential business development could include factory refurbished, or even new, Model 47 helicopters in the future. “The survey of our existing customer base is crucial to us understanding the future demand for new or refurbished Model 47 helicopters. The aircraft remains an extremely viable product, an excellent pilot training platform, and an aircraft that appears perfectly placed to fit the needs of an expanding agricultural aerospace industry.” He went on to state that equally crucial are their ongoing discussions with an engine manufacturer to support the potential build of new aircraft. “We are hopeful that an agreement can be reached to have an engine source of supply should we decide to put the model 47 back into production.”

• Le Sueur, MN (08/05/2010) SB47 received FAA Parts Manufacturer Approval. This will allow the company to begin producing replacement parts for the Bell 47 helicopter.

Over the past few months, the SB47 team has been working diligently with the FAA in developing a quality control system. That system has now been approved and is ready to be put into use.

The first supplement that has been issued allows SB47 to produce the bolt that attaches the pillow block to the main rotor yoke. Future supplements are already being considered and worked. The parts slated for the next supplement include bearings, mast assemblies, and tail rotor extension tubes. All parts produced under the SB47 quality system will be numbered as “SB47-xxx-xxx-x”.

SB47 would like to extend a special thanks to Bell Helicopter, the Manufacturing Inspection District Offices (MIDO) of Minneapolis, and the Aircraft Certification Offices (ACO) of Chicago for their assistance in helping us reach this important milestone!

TC Transfer

• Houston, TX (02/22/2010) - Over the years, spare parts for the Bell 47 have become in short or non-existent supply. Although Bell Helicopter ceased manufacturing of the aircraft in 1973, the market for this classic machine remains strong. To better support this market, the Bell 47 Type Certificate has been transferred to Scott’s – Bell 47, Inc. (SB47). The ceremonious transfer occurred at HAI on Feb 22, 2010.

Owner and president, Scott Churchill, is no stranger to the Bell 47. He has served as pilot, mechanic, and inspector of the aircraft for over 38 years. Sister company, Scott’s Helicopter Services, operates 19 Bell 47s, serves as a Customer Service Facility, and is a certified FAA repair station.

“By acquiring the Bell 47 Type Certificate, I hope to extend the life and usability of this aircraft. My goal is to keep parts available and priced reasonably to keep the Bell 47 as a viable option for helicopter operators worldwide” said Scott.

The first order of business for SB47 was to get the parts acquired from Bell entered in our inventory. The company completed this huge task last February, and has already begun supplying parts from that inventory.

Currently, SB47 is working on getting the supporting logistics implemented. A website is currently under construction which will ultimately include a listing of parts available in the SB47 inventory. Also, this week the company issued a licensing agreement with ATP® which will manage and provide electronic copies of technical publications. Paper copies of the publications may be obtained by contacting SB47 direct.

To satisfy the need for those parts that are no longer available, SB47 is also currently working towards receiving Parts Manufacturer Approval (PMA). Once this approval is granted, SB47 will be able to will be able to PMA those parts currently not available for the Bell 47. The PMA process will be used until the company ultimately obtains a Production Certificate.

Other projects on the horizon include establishing initial and recurrent training maintenance programs and reestablishing new agreements with the network of existing Bell 47 CSFs. These projects are slated for development later this year.

Every day, the team at SB47 is working hard at streamlining their operation. “This is a huge undertaking; it’s going to take some time to get completely organized, but it’s a challenge we look forward to. We are truly excited to be taking on this unique opportunity” said Scott.

press release

Press release courtesy of Bell Helicopter, a Textron company.
FORT WORTH, Texas (December 7, 2009) - Bell Helicopter, a Textron Inc. (NYSE: TXT) company, today announced that Scott's Helicopter has assumed ownership of the Model 47 type certificate.

Beginning in the first quarter of 2010 all aspects of commercial spares support, technical support and continued airworthiness for the FAA type certificated Bell 47 helicopter (H-1, 2H1 and 2H3) will become the responsibility of Scott's Helicopters, a Bell-approved Customer Service Facility (CSF) located in Le Sueur, Minn.

Danny Maldonado, senior vice president and chief services officer at Bell, said, "This model really started the commercial helicopter business and Bell has a lot of heritage in the 47. However, we felt it was the best thing for our customers, and the 47, to transition ongoing support to Scott's Helicopter and we have every confidence that Scott's will continue to provide outstanding service and support."
Since its inception in 1946, the Bell 47 has transformed aviation and today remains an extremely viable aircraft with unparalleled capabilities, especially in pilot training and agricultural spraying operations. Most importantly, the Bell 47 has a dedicated and loyal customer following. Scott's brings a wealth of knowledge, experience and passion to this market. Bell acknowledges this expectation by leaving its name attached to the product; the model will be re-titled as "Scott's-Bell 47."

Bell continues to explore industry alliances with its worldwide network of approved Customer Service Facilities (CSFs) to improve the overall support and mission capabilities for its legacy products. The sale of the Model 47 type certificate is the first step in developing these alliances.
